Brittany Groshong is the founder and designer behind Valley Rose, a responsibly made fine jewelry line based in Sonoma County California. Brittany grew up in Southern California and spent her childhood learning to paint, sew and be creative with anything she could get her hands on. Once at her 6th grade graduation her teacher announced to the entire audience that Brittany would grow up to be a fashion designer. This self fulfilling prophecy made Brittany realize that she did have a sartorial sensibility even at an early age, and a unique creative eye. Brittany through the years continued on developing her individual style which included once bravely chopping off all her long surfer locks into a short asymmetrical bob, and creating reimagined accessories out of broken vintage costume jewelry.
Graduating from SFAI, the art school of her dreams, Brittany received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in New Genres, a degree that taught Brittany how to push creative boundaries and to look at the world through a critical lens. Post school Brittany naturally transitioned into graphic design work and later creative direction, specializing in beauty brands. After 10 years of working for some of the best known names in the industry, Brittany found herself at a crossroads wondering where that spirited art school activist had gone.
One spring on a sabbatical from her design work, Brittany felt a calling to finally pursue her true calling and develop her own company that drew on her experience in graphic design, studio art and passion for sustainability. Having only basic understanding of jewelry making up until this point, Brittany dove headfirst into bench jewelry though Google university and eventually fell in love with the art of lost wax casting and wax carving. Her very first designs are still some of her best sellers today and embody Brittany’s core inspirations of the cosmos and nature.
Valley Rose was created to be a jewelry brand that filled a sartorial void that Brittany felt was missing in the industry while also satisfying her values for making beautiful art that leaves this world a better place. Named after Sonoma Valley, and her lifelong inspiration of roses, Valley Rose was the perfect appellation that embodied the romance and rustic spirit of the label.
With origins dating back to over 5,700 years ago, lost wax casting has allowed human civilization to harness the magic of fire and earth and turn them into precious objects. Not much has changed today from this original technique that was discovered in an unearthed archeological site aptly named “Cave of the Treasure.” A centuries old tradition, lost wax casting only limits are the artist’s imagination.
The rich history of this time honored process is where Brittany draws her inspiration. Brittany spent her formative years traveling the world always adding the the oldest historical ruins and history museums to the travel itineraries. Embarking on adventures in the past helps us to learn about our future. Brittany’s work cultivates this ancient wisdom focusing on unique handmade details and sumptuous textures.
As Antoni Gaudi famously said: “Nothing is art if it does not come from nature” which serves as the foundational thesis of Brittany’s collection. Through the use of subtle organic textures and modern forms each piece is transformed into timeless works of art that echo the mystery and beauty of the cosmos.
